Awards received by members of the department
Mihály (Misi) Kovács (LSU, PhD. 2004, adviser Prof. Frank Neubrander) is this year's sole recipient of the New Zealand Mathematical Society's “Early Career Award for Mathematical Research”. Misi's citation for the prize reads “for his innovative research in the field of stochastic partial differential equations, particularly their numerical approximation”. Congratulations Misi!
Congratulations to Andrew Barker, a VIGRE postdoctoral associate in the Department of Mathematics and the Center for Computation and Technology, who was awarded the 2010 George Pólya Award for mathematical exposition from the MAA. The George Pólya Award, established in 1976, is named after the renowned teacher and writer, and is given for articles of expository excellence published in The College Mathematics Journal.
Congratulations to Dr. Jasson Vindas, who completed his doctoral dissertation in 2009 under the direction of Prof. Ricardo Estrada in the Mathematics Department. Dr. Vindas's dissertation, entitled Local Behavior of Distributions and Applications, has been honored with the University's annual Distinguished Dissertation Award in Science, Engineering and Technology. Dr. Vindas is currently at a 3-year postdoctoral research position at the University of Ghent in Belgium.
Professor Susanne Brenner has been selected as one of the SIAM Fellows for 2010. This honorary distinction acknowledges nominated and selected members of the SIAM community as leading thinkers and ambassadors of applied mathematics and computational science. She was cited “For advances in finite element and multigrid methods for the numerical solution of partial differential equations.” Congratulations!
Professor Milen Yakimov is the first recipient of the newly established Carruth McGehee Award for Excellent Research in Mathematics by a Junior Faculty Member.
Jintao Cui, a doctoral student of Professor Susanne Brenner, received student paper prizes awarded at the 2009 SIAM SEAS Spring Meeting held in Columbia, SC. The selection committee was very impressed with his presentation of his research, as well as the contributions his research has made to mathematics.
Congratulations to Jasson Vindas, doctoral student of Ricardo Estrada, who has been awarded the Costa Rica Young Scientist Award. The prize is rotated among the different scientific areas, and is given to a young mathematician every 4 years. The first math winner, in 1992, also has an LSU connection.
Professor George Cochran received the Mathematical Association of America's (MAA) Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics from the Louisiana/Mississippi sections of the MAA. Nationwide, twenty-four mathematicians receive Sectional Distinguished Teaching Awards. Dr. Cochran will be the nominee from the Louisiana/Mississippi section for the national MAA Distinguished Teaching Award and will give an hour address at the 2009 meeting MAA meeting of the Louisiana/Mississippi section.
