LSU Department of Mathematics Assistant Professor Rui Han has received a National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) grant from the NSF Analysis Program for his research in Schrödinger operators on lattices. This award will provide funding for Dr. Han’s research over five years for nearing half a million dollars and provides support for a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program each summer for three years of the project as well as support for Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researcher. Collaboration will be supported through domestic and international travel for Dr. Han to present findings at international conferences and host collaborators at LSU to further the project.
Dr. Rui Han joined the Department of Mathematics in 2020, having served as a Hale Visiting Assistant Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology for two years. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine, where his advisor was Svetlana Jitomirskaya, and he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study for one year. Dr. Han’s research interest includes mathematical physics, harmonic analysis, dynamical systems, and ergodic theory. His current NSF-funded research involves mathematical understanding of phenomena in physics, in particular those arising from the multi-layer graphene structures. Dr. Han is supporting undergraduate mathematics research through a research group project involving Laplacian spectra on periodic discrete graphs, which are related to various important indexes of the graphs.
He has collaborated on research-focused articles featured in leading mathematics journals, such as Advances in Mathematics, Analysis & PDE, Annales Henri Poincaré, Communications in Mathematical Physics, International Mathematics Research Notices, Inventiones Mathematicae, and Transactions of the AMS.
Dr. Han is co-organizer of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) Special Session hosted by the University of Virginia in March 2022 and a reviewer of the US-Israel Binational Science Foundation and has refereed for 14 academic and research journals.
