LSU performed well on the 2016 Putnam Mathematical Competition, earning a Team Rank of 62nd out of the 415 North American colleges and universities that participated. This prestigious competition is comprised of a written exam that is administered annually each December, and is widely known as one of the world's most difficult scientific competitions. Out of a possible total of 120 points, the median score this year was 1, which means that over half of the 4164 students who competed earned either zero or one point! LSU had 6 students earn a positive score, led by Chandler McCarthur, whose 27 points was ranked 530th nationally, and Derek Walker, who scored 18 points and was ranked in the top 20%.
