Graduate Wins Distinguished Dissertation Award

Congratulations to Dr. Jasson Vindas, who completed his doctoral dissertation in 2009 under the direction of Prof. Ricardo Estrada in the Mathematics Department.  Dr. Vindas's dissertation, entitled Local Behavior of Distributions and Applications, has been honored with the University's annual  Distinguished Dissertation Award in Science, Engineering and Technology.  Dr. Vindas is currently at a 3-year postdoctoral research position at the University of Ghent in Belgium.

Brenner Selected as SIAM Fellow

Professor Susanne Brenner has been selected as one of the SIAM Fellows for 2010. This honorary distinction acknowledges nominated and selected members of the SIAM community as leading thinkers and ambassadors of applied mathematics and computational science. She was cited “For advances in finite element and multigrid methods for the numerical solution of partial differential equations.” Congratulations!

Professor Milen Yakimov is the first recipient of the newly established Carruth McGehee Award for Excellent Research in Mathematics by a Junior Faculty Member.

Jintao Cui Receives a 2009 SIAM Student Paper Prize

Jintao Cui, a doctoral student of Professor Susanne Brenner, received student paper prizes awarded at the 2009 SIAM SEAS Spring Meeting held in Columbia, SC. The selection committee was very impressed with his presentation of his research, as well as the contributions his research has made to mathematics.

Jasson Vindas Wins National Award

Congratulations to Jasson Vindas, doctoral student of Ricardo Estrada, who has been awarded the Costa Rica Young Scientist Award. The prize is rotated among the different scientific areas, and is given to a young mathematician every 4 years. The first math winner, in 1992, also has an LSU connection.

George Cochran receives MAA Sectional Distinguished Teaching Award

Professor George Cochran received the Mathematical Association of America's (MAA) Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics from the Louisiana/Mississippi sections of the MAA. Nationwide, twenty-four mathematicians receive Sectional Distinguished Teaching Awards. Dr. Cochran will be the nominee from the Louisiana/Mississippi section for the national MAA Distinguished Teaching Award and will give an hour address at the 2009 meeting MAA meeting of the Louisiana/Mississippi section.

Susanne Brenner Receives Humboldt Research Award

Susanne Brenner received a prestigious Humboldt Research Award in recognition of lifetime achievement. The story (732KB PDF) appears on page 1007 of the September issue of the Notices of the American Mathematical Society.
