Math 1101: The Nature of Mathematics (Honors)

Section 1, Fall 1998

Professor James Madden

This course concentrates on developing critical quantitative reasoning in understanding and interpreting data, particularly statistical data. The official title of the course is "The Nature of Mathematics," which suggests a question that's as old as civilization. I don't think we're going to get an answer to that one, but I hope the course will demonstrate how the profound mathematical concepts in probability theory create a foundation for statistical reasoning.

This site is experimental. Some day, I hope that my classes will be collaborations that design and produce sites that are not merely records of class work, but are complete resources that others can use for learning. The course web site features student work, because this is the most important thing that happens in the course. My philosophy is that my students are my collaborators and even coauthors. The course is a success if they can communicate the important ideas to one another---and to those of you "out there" who come to visit.
